| Summary, etc | Interrumpida solo dos veces desde 1833, la democracia en Chile sufrió su mayor revés en 1973, cuando las fuerzas armadas chilenas dirigidas por Augusto Pinochet arrebataron el poder al presidente marxista elegido por el pueblo Salvador Allende en un golpe militar que terminó con la muerte de Allende. Diecisiete años después, en marzo de 1990, se restableció la democracia cuando Pinochet entregó el poder a un presidente electo, Patricio Aylwin. Gran parte del debate internacional se ha centrado en el alcance de la responsabilidad de Estados Unidos en estos eventos. En Estados Unidos y la Democracia en Chile, el renombrado académico Paul Sigmund toma un camino intermedio, argumentando que la política estadounidense ha sido un factor significativo, aunque no decisivo, que ha influido en el desarrollo político chileno reciente. |
